Windows 10 (install or not?)

Postby donkeymilk » 09 Jun 2015, 17:07

I just downloaded the latest release of windows 10:
10134.0.150530-1700._OEMRET_X64-EN.iso (i shortened the name a bit as it was too long).

Any one think it would be a good idea to install it over win 7 32bit?

I was going to upgrade my win7 32bit to win7 64bit but i thought it might be a good time to see if win10 is worth having.

Do you think it might cause too many problems with games compatibility ?

I have not tired it yet, I have reserved a copy for when its released just to give it a try.
It was some sort of free upgrade I got the choice of doing. If I do not like it or its to much like win8 what I can't stand I will go back to win7x64

Yeh,I'm thinking it might be best to stick with win7 x64 for now.
I'll wait to see what people say after it's been released a short while.

Yeah ! I am also looking forward to installing a copy of win10, If it is as good as win7. If I am not wrong win10 is mixture of both win7 and win8 and it supports next gen directx 12. Lets hope win10 will be better.

I installed on a 30gb partition just to have a look.
I installed 'classic shell 4.2.2 beta' soon after :)
I can't be doing with all those giant app icons :) ,i know some peeps like them ,but not me.
You can hide the libraries folders which is definitely good and you can get the explorer looking/acting like win xp explorer with a couple of tweaks.

The O.S runs really well on an older computer, it automatically downloaded defender definition updates + a new AMD driver for my graphics card.
I booted up watchman pc game and was surprised at well it ran.
I have a HD 5450 AMD card + 4 gigs of memory on a Dell E520 so i wasn't expecting too much.
But it definitely runs better than on win 7.
I found a good command line trick to install net 3.5 + 2.0 from the win10 cd.
Apparently it''s on the win 10 cd but isn't installed.

It will probably have a load of Microsoft "spyware" sending info out ,so i 'm a bit wary of it until more experienced people start reporting back about what the o.s is doing in the background.

But it does seem like a good O.S at first glance.
sidenote:
Check your win7 for these 2 updates:
KB2952664(sending win 7 telemetry info to M.S)
KB3035583 GWX CONFIG MANAGER (also puts folders/files in system 32 folder + reg entries)
and GWXConfigManager.exe calling home with info about your system,

It was supposed to be now 'July' i think.
But Microsoft have put the date back again to iron out some "bugs".
I installed 10134.0.150530-1700._OEMRET_X64-EN.iso ,but it needs a lot of rebooting after install.
The desktop with Cortana failed to load a couple of times ,but after switching the computer off for 10mins
and rebooting it was ok.
Some progs wouldn't work either after install until i did a shutdown and reboot.
But they were fine afterwards.

I think if u can shutdown all the cloud stuff it will probably be like a souped-up win7.
Though i imagine it won't be easy to stop Microsoft forcing us down this "web app metro" route.

Thanks thirunarayan.
I read somewhere that it's been put back to iron some bugs.

The integration with Xbox looks interesting too.
Though i haven't picked up a console in a long time.

Just read this :

Yeah ! but Microsoft is working on those servers to keep server alive as much as possible {or if they can't do that then they will cap the number of download per day tho}, This is only way to keep servers online either fix it or cap it.

Pretty much with you on that King! ;) I know people who rushed to upgrade to Xbox One when it came out only to find they now have to be constantly online to even play a game!

I gotta say though that I loved the PS2 - I had a large HDD in mine, had it online, used a hub with it to play LAN games, had all kinds of third party apps running on it (it was my main media player through my TV for ages) and had a library of games exceeding 300 titles. The mod scene for that console was the f*cking best!

I have an original xbox ,a couple of the old N64 consoles ,a Dreamcast plus a few other old consoles and stuff.
I stopped with consoles a long time ago ,just the pc now.
You can't beat the pc when it comes to gaming.
It's also all the great modders and fixers out there who are always coming up with great tweaks and mods.

Yeh , i have to agree with that reddit topic.
The best topic i've read on the subject ,amazing !

I'm using an old beatup dell with 4gb memory and an old amd graphics card.
It didn't cost me anything apart from the dvd burner.

It plays all the latest pc games ,no problem.

I think future windows will be service updates .
So no need to install another new O.S.

sidenote:
win 7/8/8.1
Remove all the new Win7 telemetry spying updates with a batch file :
Code: Select all
https://gist.github.com/tarampampam/a0db45fb0de5976300b1

The code gets updated with new entries.
There a a few forks too.
